TH.INTEL’s numbers had already made the case for it before the gates opened: a Benchmark Performance Index of 93.45, the highest carried into today’s race by any horse with more than one run into its current preparation.

Its Finishing Differential sits at a modest +1, not the standout figure in today’s field — Pereille (+7) and each of Livalittle, Anemacore and Cool Music (+6) carry stronger closing profiles on paper. Today’s win wasn’t built on a dominant late sprint; a 0.21-length margin over Manpower reflects a tight finish rather than a demolition job.

Velocity Rating tells a similar story of a horse racing just below its ceiling. Neverenoughlego’s Velocity Rating peaked at 12.83 on the third start of this preparation, back on 12 April, and has eased gradually since — 12.71 next start, then 10.19, then 10.11 last time out on 9 July, 2.72 rating points below that campaign high. The last two runs have sat close together rather than continuing to build, the profile of a horse performing just under its best rather than one still finding form.

Today’s 30-day turnaround follows a 56-day gap, the longest break of this preparation, and sits shorter than the horse’s own average of 41 days — a standard rebuild rather than part of a pattern of consecutive quick back-ups. Paired with a Benchmark Performance Index that already led every proven galloper in today’s field, the read was of a horse whose underlying numbers had held up even as its raw closing speed eased off its April peak. Today’s tight, line-honours finish over Manpower — at a notably higher grade than it had previously raced — is exactly what that data already suggested was there.

Velocity Rating has climbed across those two prep runs, from 5.87 first-up to 8.96 last start, a figure that now stands as her outright career peak. Today’s Race 3 also marks her first assignment away from the provincial company of Scone and Muswellbrook, onto a principal Sydney track.

The turnaround into today’s run carries a genuine trade-off rather than a straightforward positive. Avista’s two runs so far this preparation are 16 days apart, and today’s assignment follows just 13 days after the most recent of them — the second quick back-up in a row this campaign. A single fast turnaround is generally well supported in TH.INTEL’s data, and Avista’s own evidence backs that up, since her first quick back-up produced the career-high Velocity Rating already discussed above. Two consecutive fast turnarounds carry a different signal. Our data shows performance more often eases on the back of the second one, rather than the repeated quick-back pattern continuing to build on itself. That is a real question worth weighing against an otherwise clean profile, not a flaw in the numbers themselves.

Finishing Differential adds another layer to the same read. Avista’s career figure of +6 is the strongest in today’s Race 3 field, built from a pattern of settling off the speed and improving through the concluding stages rather than giving ground late — each of her three wins has come from a similar off-the-pace position. Paired with a Benchmark Performance Index that already leads the meeting’s tested runners, it points to a mare whose finishing effort holds up under genuine pressure, not just a strong number produced against moderate company.

Two runs into the preparation and unbeaten through both of them, Avista’s profile has been built entirely at provincial tracks. Today’s Randwick assignment is the first genuine test of whether that capacity carries onto a principal track against deeper opposition — not a verdict on the campaign so far, but the next data point in learning where the ceiling actually sits.

Inside its own event, Race 4, the gap is more telling: Eeny Meeny sits more than eleven points clear of Frosted In Time’s next-best 78.46, the largest margin between any two runners in the race.

That profile has been built from just two starts, and both sit inside the same preparation — Eeny Meeny’s Benchmark Performance Index and its current-prep average land on the identical 90.00 because there is no earlier campaign to average against. The four-year-old opened its account at Sale in June, winning a restricted maiden over 1200m on a heavy track. Trained by Robbie Griffiths, who began training in 1991 after riding 250 winners as a jockey for stables including Colin Hayes, Bart Cummings and Lee Freedman, the gelding was then sent into open handicap company at Morphettville 45 days later — a Benchmark 64 grade, its first look at genuinely open opposition — and finished third of eleven, beaten 2.02 lengths, for a Performance Index of 80.00.

Velocity Rating captures the size of that step up. The winning run at Sale produced 7.48, Eeny Meeny’s outright peak for the preparation; the very next start, against far stronger opposition, produced 2.62. That is a real gap, and a plausible cost of the class rise rather than evidence of a horse going backwards. The raw capacity itself is not in question, having been proven decisively in the first start. What remains genuinely untested is how much of that capacity survives contact with open-grade rivals, and today’s Seymour Race 4 repeats the exact question rather than posing a new one — same Benchmark 64 grade, same 1100m trip as last start.

Today’s turnaround is 13 days, well inside the single 45-day gap that separates its two runs to date. Because that 45-day gap is the only turnaround on Eeny Meeny’s record, this quick back-up reads as a first rather than a second in a row — the shape our data most consistently supports, not the repeated quick-back pattern that tends to interrupt performance.

Finishing Differential sits at +1 through both starts, an identical reading each time — Eeny Meeny has finished fractionally better than where it sat mid-race on both occasions, a small, genuinely repeatable pattern across a short sample. Three starts into a single, uninterrupted preparation, the profile still carries more open questions than closed ones — chiefly, whether the dominant maiden win or the competitive step up in grade is the truer read of what this horse can do. Today’s Race 4 isn’t the conclusion of either story — it is simply the next opportunity to learn which version of Eeny Meeny’s capacity holds up.

That gap traces entirely to the horse’s first preparation, back in December and January, when a ninth-placed run at Randwick sat between two narrow placings; nothing this campaign has come close to repeating it. Perfect Justice also carries a career Finishing Differential of +4, meaning it has typically finished further forward than where it sat mid-race rather than fading through it — a closing profile that lines up with the consistency the current preparation has shown.

The turnaround pattern behind that run of finishes has been steady rather than aggressive. Perfect Justice’s gaps this campaign have run 14, 14, 21 and 14 days, with the single 21-day pause falling immediately after its fastest effort of the preparation — extra recovery time granted straight after its biggest test, not a sign of anything amiss. Today’s 13-day turnaround is essentially a continuation of that same rhythm, one day inside its long-run career average of 14 days, rather than a genuinely fast back-up worth flagging either way.

Velocity Rating tells a slightly different story. It climbed through the first three runs of the preparation to a peak of 9.92 on 20 June, then eased to 7.80 and 6.19 across the two runs since — including the win, which came on a lower raw pace figure than the horse had shown three weeks earlier. The finishing outcomes have stayed strong even as the raw pace number has softened, leaving open whether Perfect Justice is racing within itself off the back of that mid-prep effort or whether its sharpest pace for the campaign has already passed.

What today does test is unfamiliar ground. Every one of Perfect Justice’s eight career starts has come at Randwick or Wyong, and all of them in benchmark handicap company; the Coffs Harbour Cup brings both a new track and a feature-race assignment into the picture for the first time. Prepared throughout by John Sargent, the Randwick trainer whose own résumé includes a Group One Australian Oaks win with Gust of Wind, Perfect Justice takes a clean, tightly bunched preparation into a test its performance profile hasn’t faced before — the raw capacity is established; whether it holds up away from home is the question today answers.

Grinzinger Pod arrived at today’s assignment with six runs to its name and not yet a win among them — three thirds, two sixths and a fifth, spread across two separate preparations dating back to December. Its Benchmark Performance Index of 53.02 is the average of that placing-heavy record, not a single standout run, and its career Finishing Differential of +1 points to a horse that has generally finished further forward than where it sat mid-race rather than fading through it — the profile of a genuine finishing effort that simply hadn’t found the placing to match it yet.

Its Last Run Velocity Rating, 7.68 from a first-up return at this same track on 9 July, sat just 0.01 below its outright career-best Velocity Rating of 7.69 — but that peak was set back on 18 January, in the preparation that ended well before this one began. Two runs into the current campaign, Grinzinger Pod was arriving within a fraction of the fastest release it has ever shown, rather than still building toward one.

Today’s turnaround was 28 days, a little longer than the 18-day average across the four gaps of its earlier preparation. That average, though, is built entirely from gaps inside the old campaign; this one is only two runs old, with no in-prep rhythm of its own yet to compare against, so today’s gap is genuinely the first turnaround of the new preparation rather than a deviation from an established pattern.

Six runs and two preparations into its career, Grinzinger Pod’s first win arrived leading throughout rather than needing to find one from the back, with both trend filters already pointing toward it before the gates opened. The placings had been building a profile for months; today simply supplied the result to match it.

Spirited Defence returns to Ballarat Synthetic today for a fourth start at the track that has already produced both of its career wins. Trainer Andrew Noblet has worked on-course there since relocating his stable from Caulfield in 2020, and today’s Race 5 brings him a runner with an established relationship to the circuit — second in a Benchmark 70 there in July last year, a win in a Benchmark 64 the following month, then another win this June to open its current preparation.

That June win opened a preparation now building toward its third start. Velocity Rating has climbed from 4.97 on that day to a career-high 7.73 last start at Pakenham Synthetic, reached just two runs into a fresh campaign rather than deep into one, and without any accompanying rise in grade — today’s Manhari Benchmark 70 Handicap is the same class as each of its last three starts. The one time Spirited Defence did step up in grade, a Benchmark 74 at Ballarat in December, it finished sixth of nine, and it has raced at Benchmark 70 ever since, which is the level today’s career-high reading needs to be judged against rather than the higher grade it couldn’t hold.

The gap into today sits at 17 days, a little tighter than Spirited Defence’s own average turnaround of 20 days across the four in-prep gaps on its record — 21, 13, 25 and 20, a narrow enough spread that the average isn’t being pulled around by any single outlier. The 20-day gap between its first two runs this preparation landed right on that average rather than qualifying as fast itself, which makes today’s tightening the first genuinely quick back-up of the campaign rather than a second in a row. That distinction is the one our own data cares about — a single fast turnaround is generally well supported, while the regression risk shows up on the second consecutive quick back-up, which isn’t the case here.

Against the rest of Race 5, Spirited Defence’s Benchmark Performance Index of 76.35 is the highest of the ten runners entered, with Miss Mahjong at 70.95 and Shaalute at 63.76 the closest to it. That figure is built across three preparations stretching back to July 2025, not a single strong run, and a career Finishing Differential of +2 points to a horse whose closing efforts have generally held up rather than faded through the line. Today’s assignment adds a fourth data point at the one track where all of that has come together before.

Beaten by less than a length in both starts of its career, Autafinna carries the highest Benchmark Performance Index of any proven galloper on today’s Gosford card — 87.86, comfortably clear of Zubba Storm’s 82.10 for the next-best mark among the meeting’s established performers.

Both of those runs sit inside the same preparation — in full, this is Autafinna’s racing career to date, which is why its Benchmark Performance Index and its current-prep average land on the identical 87.86. The six-year-old finished second at Taree on 30 June, beaten 0.53 lengths in an 11-horse field, then backed up three weeks later and closed to within 0.38 lengths in a field of eight. Patrick Cleave, the Newcastle trainer who saddles it today, built his own career the same incremental way. A qualified builder before he bought into his first share of a horse, Cleave worked through Robert Hickmott’s stable and the Snowden operation at Randwick, then ran Kris Lees’ fifty-horse Newcastle barn as foreman before taking out his own training licence.

That same incremental shape shows up in Velocity Rating. Autafinna’s mark climbed from 5.97 first-up to 7.38 last start, its career peak, arriving at today’s assignment at the highest level of fitness it has shown so far — with no older preparation to weigh that peak against, since this is still the entirety of its racing history. The two runs have also come at progressively longer trips, 1600m then 2018m, and today’s 2100m extends that same pattern rather than representing a sudden step up in distance. The raw capacity is there on paper; today tests how far it stretches.

Today’s turnaround is 16 days, shorter than the single 21-day gap that separates its two runs to date. With only one turnaround on record, this reads as a first quick back-up rather than a second in a row — the pattern our data generally supports, rather than the one that tends to bring a performance regression. It’s a genuine positive rather than an automatic one — a two-run career leaves limited history to draw on, and today’s run will itself become part of that record.

Finishing Differential sits at +2 this prep, meaning Autafinna has generally finished further forward than where it sat mid-race rather than fading through it — support for two narrow placings that read as a repeatable pattern rather than a single close call. Jockey Mikayla Weir partners it again today from barrier one, having ridden both of its runs to date. Two starts into a short career, the shape of this preparation is a clean one so far, and today’s Maiden Plate over 2100m is simply its next data point rather than a resolution one way or the other.

TH.INTEL’s Performance Profile comes from Hobart Race 9, where #3 Southern Auroras entered the race with one of the meeting’s more compelling preparation profiles, before making it back-to-back wins to open the campaign, taking out the Class 2 Handicap over 1200m at $4.20.

Entering today, the data already pointed this way. Southern Auroras carries a Benchmark Performance Index of 88.66, and both of TH.INTEL’s trend filters, PlaceRating and Bm PI, were climbing before the horse stepped onto the track. Those are the trends TH.INTEL looks for in a horse building towards peak performance.

The shape of this preparation is a clean one so far. Southern Auroras spelled for close to five and a half months, from early February to mid-July, then returned first-up at this same track and won last start. Seventeen days on, today’s run backed that up, its second win from its second start of the new campaign.

Today’s Last Run Velocity Rating, 3.84, sits 1.14 below Southern Auroras’s career-best VR of 4.98. Taken alone that reads as short of its ceiling, but the 4.98 mark was set in a maiden win back in December 2025, a separate preparation that had already ended well before this one began. Two runs into the new campaign, the horse hasn’t yet set a benchmark of its own to measure against, so the honest read is that there is no established campaign peak against which to measure today’s performance.

The 17-day gap into today’s run was longer than Southern Auroras’s 13-day AvSpell, though that average is built entirely from gaps inside its previous, now-finished preparation. This campaign is only two runs old, with no in-prep rhythm of its own yet to compare against, so today’s turnaround was genuinely the first gap of the new preparation rather than a deviation from an established one. A longer gap naturally raises questions around continuity of fitness. Southern Auroras answered those questions by producing another winning performance.

Two starts into a new preparation, Southern Auroras is building a clean performance profile. The early indicators were pointing in this direction before the gates opened, and today’s result simply reinforced what the data had already begun to suggest.

TH.INTEL’s Performance Profile comes from Bairnsdale Race 6, where #3 Bank Heist got up by the barest of margins, a nose over Almago, to salute at $11.00 and record back-to-back wins.

Entering today, the numbers were already building toward this. Bank Heist’s Benchmark Performance Index sits at 62.09, and its most recent runs, both on the raw result and on the closing-and-holding profile TH.INTEL tracks underneath it, had climbed above its own career average. That is the read TH.INTEL looks for in a horse building toward a win, not simply riding one out.

Six runs into this preparation, the pattern has been a gradual build. A third at Echuca, a second at Moe, a run of minor placings through the middle of winter, then a maiden win at this same track on 13 July. That run stands out for more than the result. Its Performance Index that day was a career high, even though its Velocity Rating, 2.99, was the lowest of the entire preparation. Today told the same story again. Bank Heist sat third at the 800m and second at the 400m, not the sharpest horse in the race on raw pace, and still found enough to get its nose in front.

The 22-day turnaround represented the longest break of the preparation and nine days longer than the horse’s historical average. While extended breaks can interrupt fitness momentum, they can equally provide an opportunity to consolidate a campaign. In Bank Heist’s case, the profile suggests the latter.

Bank Heist, trained by Vincent Hall, also reflects a stable that has steadily improved the horse throughout the campaign. Rather than chasing peak speed, the profile suggests a horse progressively building race fitness before producing consecutive winning performances. Jockey Nadia Daniels partnered Bank Heist for the third straight run, aboard for both of this preparation’s wins.

Two wins from its past two starts suggest Bank Heist’s current preparation has reached the point where fitness is now translating into results. The profile was signalling progression before today’s race; today’s performance simply confirmed it.

Ngongotaha’s Benchmark Performance Index of 84.85 tops every proven galloper on today’s Cranbourne card, built on a maiden campaign in which its finishing position has never gone backwards — fourth, third, second, second, and a win last start at Moe.

Every one of those five starts sits inside the same preparation — this is still the entirety of Ngongotaha’s racing life to date, which is why its Benchmark Performance Index and current-prep average land on the identical 84.85. Rachael Cunningham’s four-year-old has never finished worse than fourth, and today’s Prestige Event Hire Handicap at Cranbourne is its first start outside maiden company.

The Performance Index trajectory backs up that shape, climbing in three of its four run-to-run comparisons — 66.67, 77.78, 92.31, a step back to 87.50, then a career-high 100.00 last time out. Velocity Rating tells a messier story. Its highest reading, 6.20, came second-up at Bairnsdale on 12 June, and last start’s 3.82 still sits 2.38 points below that mark, so the raw pace behind its best sectional run three starts ago hasn’t reappeared on paper even as the finishing results kept improving.

Today’s 15-day turnaround sits almost exactly on Ngongotaha’s own average gap of 14 days across this preparation, which has ranged from as tight as 8 days to as wide as 18. That range makes today’s gap unremarkable in either direction — not a deliberately patient spacing, not a fast back-up carrying the regression risk that shows up when horses race twice quickly in a row. It reads as a normal recovery cycle for this horse.

The bigger open question is the level, not the spacing. Every prior start came in maiden grade, and today Ngongotaha steps into open handicap company for the first time. Its Performance Index and Benchmark Performance Index both lead the meeting’s proven pool into that test, so the underlying capacity is there on paper — the Moe win simply hasn’t yet been asked to hold up against winners. Cunningham trains a small, hands-on team from her stable near Pakenham, and has taken this horse through an uninterrupted rise across five starts to reach today’s step up.

A Benchmark Performance Index of 87.04 leads every established galloper — more than one run into its current preparation — at today’s Canterbury meeting, and it belongs to Dubai Warrior, a little over six points clear of its own stablemate Aethelwulf’s 80.83.

Dubai Warrior lines up in Race 4’s Asahi Super Dry Handicap for Warwick Farm trainer Matthew Smith, who saddles three runners in the race. Its data carries a genuine unknown into today’s assignment — all six starts of its career to date have been run over 1600m, and today’s 1900m journey is new ground in every sense. Smith addressed the step up directly this week, describing Dubai Warrior as “a lot more straightforward” than stablemate Aethelwulf and saying the horse “knows what he’s doing” and will “bounce and put himself there” in the run.

Performance Index has climbed through each of its three runs this preparation — 66.67 at Gosford, 77.78 at Hawkesbury, then 100.00 last start at Wyong, the ceiling the metric awards for winning outright. Finishing Differential moved with it. After finishing two places behind where it settled at Gosford and one behind at Hawkesbury, Dubai Warrior turned that around at Wyong, finishing four places better than where it sat mid-race — the best Finishing Differential of its six-race career, and the shape behind the win itself.

Velocity Rating adds a note of caution to that reading. Last-run Velocity Rating sits at 6.14, some way below the 7.51 career peak, though that peak dates to July 2025, a full preparation ago, not anywhere in the current campaign. The best Velocity Rating Dubai Warrior has actually produced this time in work is 7.00, from its second-up run at Hawkesbury — last start’s 6.14 sits below even that current-prep mark, so the win at Wyong arrived without matching its own best pace of the preparation.

Recovery Pattern carries a similar note. Today’s run comes 13 days after its last start, the third quick turnaround in a row this preparation, following gaps of 14 and 21 days between its previous runs — all well inside its 30-day average spell, a figure pulled up mostly by a longer break earlier in its racing life rather than reflecting how Dubai Warrior has actually been managed this campaign. TH.INTEL’s own data on stacked fast back-ups says that pattern is a genuine trade-off rather than an automatic positive: a first quick turnaround tends to hold up, but performance has more often regressed once a horse strings together several in a row, and today’s 13-day gap is the fastest of the three.

Among today’s established form lines, no horse on the Bairnsdale card carries a stronger Performance Index than Magnardo — 98.7, more than 20 points clear of the next-best proven galloper.

Seven runs into this preparation, Magnardo has been placed or better in all seven — six wins and a narrow second — and heads into today’s Dyson Group BM56 Handicap at Bairnsdale off the back of that run. Among the meeting’s established gallopers, horses with more than one run into their current prep, its Benchmark Performance Index of 98.7 stands clear, with the next-best of that group, Chateau Vega, more than 20 points behind at 77.63, across an eight-race, 105-runner card.

Magnardo’s Last Run Velocity Rating (2.18) was actually the lowest of its prep, well under the 6.33 peak it set back in April. The finishing position has stayed perfect, but that last win looks to have been ground out rather than run away with — worth watching whether today’s run shows the pace coming back, or whether the horse is simply winning on class regardless.

Magnardo’s turnaround into today’s run is 39 days, well up on the 23-day average that’s carried it through this prep, though not a first for the campaign — a longer gap, 49 days, already sits between its April 28 and June 16 runs. Trainer Reece Goodwin took out his training licence in 2021 after riding on Victoria’s picnic circuit, and has built his stable around Pakenham, reaching his 100th career winner there in August last year. He also has a genuine record at this track — three wins from twelve starts at Bairnsdale over the past year, a 25% strike rate. Magnardo steps out from barrier 8 under Bailey Kinninmont.

Today’s Profile Horse comes off the strength of a genuinely dominant campaign — the open question is whether the extra time off resets that slipping Velocity Rating, or whether it’s there simply to keep a winning formula ticking over.

Our Dandi Angel heads into today’s meeting off a career-high Velocity Rating last start and a +3 Finishing Differential this prep.

Our Dandi Angel has had only two runs this preparation — a minor placing first-up on 3 July, then a benchmark win on 20 July — but that second run stands out for more than the result. Its Velocity Rating that day, 6.80, is also its best of the prep: the win and the pace peak arrived together, which is a cleaner signal than a win on class alone.

That form is enough to top today’s Gundagai card: a Benchmark Performance Index of 85.71, clear of Siyaasi’s 77.1 as the next-best of the meeting’s 77 entries. The Finishing Differential of +3 backs it up — across its two runs this prep, Our Dandi Angel has generally finished further forward than where it sat mid-race, rather than fading through the line.

Today’s turnaround is 15 days, a touch inside its own 17-day average this prep — nothing dramatic, but consistent with a horse being kept ticking over rather than given a breather. Trainer Allan McRae runs a small team of around half a dozen horses out of Yass alongside a horse chiropractic business, and is known for travelling well beyond the local circuit to find a race he can win.
