Spirited Defence returns to Ballarat Synthetic today for a fourth start at the track that has already produced both of its career wins. Trainer Andrew Noblet has worked on-course there since relocating his stable from Caulfield in 2020, and today’s Race 5 brings him a runner with an established relationship to the circuit — second in a Benchmark 70 there in July last year, a win in a Benchmark 64 the following month, then another win this June to open its current preparation.
That June win opened a preparation now building toward its third start. Velocity Rating has climbed from 4.97 on that day to a career-high 7.73 last start at Pakenham Synthetic, reached just two runs into a fresh campaign rather than deep into one, and without any accompanying rise in grade — today’s Manhari Benchmark 70 Handicap is the same class as each of its last three starts. The one time Spirited Defence did step up in grade, a Benchmark 74 at Ballarat in December, it finished sixth of nine, and it has raced at Benchmark 70 ever since, which is the level today’s career-high reading needs to be judged against rather than the higher grade it couldn’t hold.
The gap into today sits at 17 days, a little tighter than Spirited Defence’s own average turnaround of 20 days across the four in-prep gaps on its record — 21, 13, 25 and 20, a narrow enough spread that the average isn’t being pulled around by any single outlier. The 20-day gap between its first two runs this preparation landed right on that average rather than qualifying as fast itself, which makes today’s tightening the first genuinely quick back-up of the campaign rather than a second in a row. That distinction is the one our own data cares about — a single fast turnaround is generally well supported, while the regression risk shows up on the second consecutive quick back-up, which isn’t the case here.
Against the rest of Race 5, Spirited Defence’s Benchmark Performance Index of 76.35 is the highest of the ten runners entered, with Miss Mahjong at 70.95 and Shaalute at 63.76 the closest to it. That figure is built across three preparations stretching back to July 2025, not a single strong run, and a career Finishing Differential of +2 points to a horse whose closing efforts have generally held up rather than faded through the line. Today’s assignment adds a fourth data point at the one track where all of that has come together before.
