Race 3 – No. 3 Tennessee Bound
Our TH.INTEL Profile Horse for Saturday is No. 3 Tennessee Bound in Race 3 at Caulfield.
The Ciaron Maher-trained mare returns 16 days after her most recent start, slightly shorter than her average turnaround of 21 days, and lines up for the third run of this preparation.
Tennessee Bound is one of three horses to hold the highest Performance Index on the Caulfield card. When reviewing her profile, that rating comes as little surprise.
The lightly raced mare remains undefeated, progressing confidently through the grades while consistently racing on speed and holding her position through the line. Rather than relying on a sharp turn of foot, her performances have been built on sustained speed and the ability to maintain her advantage under pressure.
Equally impressive is her conditioning profile. Her Velocity Rating has improved incrementally with each start this preparation, indicating a horse that continues to build fitness while maintaining an already high level of performance. Producing that level of progression in an elite performer is a hallmark of a well-managed preparation and reflects the standards consistently associated with the Ciaron Maher stable.

However, after reviewing Tennessee Bound’s performance profile, I couldn’t help but wonder where the market had assessed her chances. Seeing her installed as a short-priced favourite came as no surprise. Applying an independent performance methodology, TH.INTEL arrived at the same conclusion through the strength of her underlying performance signals.
Still relatively early in her career, Tennessee Bound appears to be a mare with considerable upside. It will be fascinating to watch how the stable continues to develop her through the grades as her preparation unfolds, and what the coming spring may have in store.

Seafall is ten runs into its current preparation — tied for the deepest campaign on the entire Caulfield card — and its Peak Velocity Rating (10.14) is still one of the fastest recorded by any runner on the day. That combination is the interesting part: a horse this deep into a prep is usually the one fading, not the one still producing career-best speed, backed by a positive Closing Index (+4).
Where Tennessee Bound represents a young, undefeated mare still building her résumé, Seafall represents the opposite proposition entirely — a battle-hardened campaigner whose fitness hasn’t cracked despite the workload. Two very different reasons the same card is worth watching closely.
