Sandown Hillside – Daily Brief (29 July 2026)
Six straight wins meet the longest break of the campaign.
TH.INTEL Race Intelligence — Sandown Hillside
Class Rank aside, the sharpest single reading of the day belongs to Shamansara, who carries both the meeting’s highest Closing Index (a measure of how strongly a horse finishes relative to the rest of its field), at +7, and shares the meeting’s highest Benchmark Performance Index, 100.00 — Performance Index measures a horse’s performance against its own field, and the Benchmark reading is that figure taken across its full racing history. R7 14. Here’s Matilda shares that same Benchmark Performance Index lead.
R2 5. Tower Bridge is one of three runners today carrying an elite Velocity Rating without yet matching it in results, a pattern worth watching build across the card.
R3 7. Mannerheim and R8 6. Allegro Miss share the meeting’s highest Average Velocity Rating, 7.86 — its typical recorded speed across recent runs, benchmarked nationally.
R3 2. Stay Silent is the meeting’s Campaign Ironhorse, entering today ten runs into its current preparation.
R5 4. Samuel Langhorne holds the meeting’s highest Last Run Velocity Rating, 8.90, the speed figure from its most recent start alone — a figure that sits well clear of anything else recorded today.
R5 2. Euphoric holds the meeting’s highest Max Grade rating, 100 — a measure of the toughest grade it has ever raced at.
R6 3. Missapprehend holds the meeting’s highest Current Preparation Velocity Rating, 8.25, the best speed it has recorded so far this campaign.
Race Intelligence: Race 6 alone carries three of this meeting’s markers — Shamansara’s Closing Index and Benchmark Performance Index lead, plus Missapprehend’s Current Preparation Velocity Rating lead. Three different readings, three different horses, one race — worth watching closely.
Ashley’s Profile Horse: Magnardo (R1 No.9)
Introduction. Magnardo lines up in Race 1 at Sandown Hillside on 29 July, one of five runners for trainer Reece Goodwin at today’s meeting. Today’s race matters because it asks a genuinely new question of a horse that has spent its entire preparation answering the same one: after six wins and a placing through Benchmark 56 grade, does the pattern hold up through the longest break of its campaign?
Preparation. This is Magnardo’s eighth run of an uninterrupted preparation that opened on 7 February — a deep, sustained campaign with no gap along the way long enough to reset it.
Performance Index. Magnardo’s Benchmark Performance Index sits at 98.7, built from a run of results that has barely wavered — six runs finishing with a maximal Performance Index of 100 and a single second placing its only blemish. Its Current Preparation figure reads identically, since the entire campaign falls inside the one preparation window: this is a horse performing at essentially the same level today as it has at any point since February.
Velocity Rating. Magnardo’s average Velocity Rating across the campaign sits at 4.15, with a peak of 6.33 recorded on 5 April. Its last-start reading, 2.18 on 26 June, is the lowest of the seven — despite still winning that day. The gap between that peak and its most recent figure suggests upside: this is a horse that hasn’t needed to show its full pace to keep winning.
Recovery Pattern. Today’s 33-day turnaround is Magnardo’s longest of the campaign, well above its own in-prep average gap of 23 days. Every prior run in this preparation has come inside five weeks of the last; this is the first time that pattern has been stretched.
Race Characteristics. Magnardo’s Finishing Differential readings have stayed modest and rarely negative across the campaign — 0, 2, 3 and 3 across its last four runs. That’s a horse that leads and holds rather than one that relies on making up ground late: the winning margin has consistently come from control, not a sprint home.
Stable Context. Reece Goodwin saddles five runners at today’s meeting, Magnardo among them. TH.INTEL’s own stable research has flagged Goodwin’s yard as a stable that builds steadily across a horse’s campaign rather than peaking early and tapering off — a pattern consistent with a horse still producing near-maximal results in its eighth run, well past the point where an early-peaking stable’s runners typically taper.
TH.INTEL Assessment. This preparation indicates a horse that has converted a long, uninterrupted campaign into remarkably consistent field-relative form, without needing to fully extend itself in doing so. The longer break behind today’s run is the one genuinely untested variable in an otherwise settled profile.
Jordan’s Profile Horse: Samuel Langhorne (R5 No.4)
Introduction. Samuel Langhorne steps out in Race 5 for trainer Eric Musgrove, and tells a very different story to Magnardo’s. Where Magnardo has dominated a Benchmark 56 campaign from the front, Samuel Langhorne has spent this entire preparation taking on stronger company at genuine staying distances — Quality and Benchmark 84 grade, out to 3,200m — and coming up short on the number that matters most: its Performance Index has ranged from 33.33 to 77.78, never once cracking the top half of a field on that measure.
Preparation. What the results haven’t shown, the shape of the running has. Samuel Langhorne has recorded a positive Finishing Differential in every one of its last eight runs — every single time, it has made genuine ground through the race, without exception. That’s not a horse getting outrun; it’s a horse consistently working home into fields it hasn’t yet beaten.
Velocity Rating. And today it arrives holding the meeting’s highest Last Run Velocity Rating, 8.90 from its most recent start on 18 July — clear of anything else recorded on this card, including Magnardo’s season-best of 6.33. Samuel Langhorne’s underlying pace is not in question. What’s in question is whether that engine has been racing in the right grade to show it.
TH.INTEL Assessment. This profile suggests a horse whose physical capability has been consistently ahead of its finishing position — a genuine Velocity Rating leader still waiting for its Performance Index to catch up. Read alongside Magnardo’s settled, front-running dominance, the two tell opposite versions of the same question: one horse that has already converted its form, and one still working to prove its engine matches the number it just posted.
