TH.INTEL began with a simple conversation.

I was speaking with a thoroughbred trainer about how horses are conditioned, developed and managed throughout a preparation. We discussed the processes used to build fitness, develop capacity, manage recovery and ultimately improve performance. Coming from a human high-performance background, I could see many parallels between the way elite athletes are prepared and the demands placed on equine athletes.

I offered to share some of the principles and learnings from human performance science that may have been applicable within a racing stable. The trainer politely responded', "Thanks, we already have it covered."

The conversation, however, left me with a question.

If those conditioning methods were already being applied, could they be identified through the horses’ performances?

Rather than speculate, I turned to the data.

Using publicly available race data and outcomes, I began analysing the stable's runners by applying the same performance principles used to monitor and develop human athletes. Instead of focusing solely on wins and placings, I searched for objective indicators of conditioning, recovery, fatigue, progression and the ability to sustain performance throughout a preparation.

The findings were revealing.

The horses consistently demonstrated patterns suggesting declining performance late in races, poor recovery between runs and limited evidence of progressive fitness development throughout their campaigns. The race data did not support the picture of a stable producing consistently well-conditioned athletes.

To test whether these observations were unique to one trainer, I analysed other stables whose training philosophies and methods I understood more closely. The contrast was striking.

Those trainers consistently exhibited repeatable performance patterns consistent with progressive conditioning, effective recovery and the ability to peak horses at the appropriate stages of a campaign. Their race results reflected the characteristics expected of well-managed high-performance athletes.

That comparison became the turning point.

It demonstrated that conditioning, preparation and campaign management leave measurable fingerprints within race performance. More importantly, it showed those fingerprints could be identified, quantified and tracked over time.

From that point, the work expanded well beyond a single stable. I continued developing metrics capable of monitoring fitness trends, preparation cycles, recovery, campaign progression and stable-wide performance patterns across the racing population.

Over time, that work evolved into a broader framework for understanding equine preparation and performance. What began as an attempt to answer a single question ultimately established the discipline of Thoroughbred Performance Intelligence.

Today, that body of work is known as TH.INTEL.

About Me

My background is in high-performance sport, where for more than two decades I have worked across coaching, athlete development, performance analytics and executive leadership.

I have coached, competed alongside and worked with athletes performing within the top 1% of fitness racing. My work is supported by formal studies in exercise science and performance, including the Science of Exercise through the University of Colorado, the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), and Australian Certificates III and IV in Fitness.

The principles of performance science are universal. Whether the athlete has two legs or four, performance is influenced by preparation, physiology, recovery and adaptation. The application is different, but the science is remarkably similar.

That perspective became the foundation of TH.INTEL.

By combining performance science with racing-specific intelligence, campaign analysis and longitudinal data, TH.INTEL provides a different way of understanding thoroughbred performance—looking beyond traditional form to identify the performance signals that shape race-day outcomes.
